JULIEANNE HENRY
INTERIOR DESIGNER
Sydney, Australia
I met Julieanne at an interior decorator’s workshop where I was hired as a photographer and filmmaker to document the days. A little while later, she contacted me to photograph a house she had designed, right in front of the bench where Wendell had proposed. I was not confident at all to shoot an interior by a famous decorator and knowing that the goal was to make it part of a book and a Belle Magazine article. So, I called my friend Pablo. Read More
Photos Pablo and I took that day…
Pablo Veiga is a Sydney based Spanish interior photographer, and brilliant at that! He cannot even count how many mag covers he shot, let alone houses. People fly him to the US to photograph epic interiors. What I love is that Pablo was a nurse when he arrived in Australia. Photography is a family affair - his grandfather documented life in Spain under Franco with his Rolleiflex. Pablo found his incredibly precious archives in a family home in Galicia. Years later, he decided to follow his dream and study photography while working as a nurse part time. When I felt too old to study, too tired, or felt that my new endeavour was too far from my previous career, I thought of Pablo. It gave me courage.
This what I did when Julieanne called me. I asked him to come shoot with me. He said yes immediately. When we stood in front of this old stone house at The Rocks in the heart of Sydney’s colonial historical quarters, we didn’t know what to expect. None of us had seen Julieanne’s work.
She opened the door and gave us her famous irresistible smile. Our jaws dropped, the house was spectacular. We discovered that Julieanne is an actual magician. She can turn bare walls into a chic and cosy home. Her choice of either a light and airy style for reception rooms and warm colours with rich patterns for the private spaces touched my French heart. I felt that I could live in Julieanne’s world. Then we climbed the stairs and reached a bedroom lit by shiny red velvet and navy blue, I wanted to move it. And the green one with its purple throw and botanical engravings…
Julieanne’s style is a touch of old world without the heaviness or sadness of a time gone by. She has the talent to make it modern while solidly anchored in history. I was thrilled when she accepted to be part of my 30 people making the world more beautiful. Let me leave Julieanne tell you more about herself in this interview below.

My mum loved the name Julieanne. She loved it’s meaning which is youthful. Mum was very particular about the spelling of my name being one word, but when my father went to register my name because mum was still in the hospital, he registered it as Julie-Anne which she was so upset about. She has always spelled my name Julieanne regardless and I have too, unless I’m signing any legal documents of course.

When I first moved out of home when I was 15 and was setting up my little pad, I found a poster at a market of ‘The Lady of Shalott’ by John William Waterhouse. I used to get lost in that painting. Just everything about it had me dreaming.

When I was a child I wanted to be a vet. I grew up with lots of animals around me. My dad is a natural with animals. He would rescue any injured ones and use our backyard as their healing place. We had sheep, joeys, dogs and chickens. I had two Fawn coloured whippets that I devoted all my time to training and caring for. Their names were Velvet and Diddle. I was always re decorating my room and our house, but I didn’t think about becoming a designer until I was older.

I’ve just lost my mum. I’ve not yet overcome it and probably never will. I just take each day as it comes right now.
-
I tend to go to use the word wonderful a lot and then I think it may be too over the top for most things I’m talking about, so I pull it back to beautiful. I love the word beautiful because I love everything to be beautiful in its own way.

Honesty, integrity, respect

It seems I am a collector of lamps. I looked around my house recently and was surprised at how many I own. I also love fabrics so I have a nice collection of fabrics too.

All the beautiful poems and verses I found in my mums home when I was recently packing up her life. She wrote some beautiful things about me that I’d never seen before. Just feelings from her heart. I will treasure them forever.

I listen to a lot of music and have very broad taste when it comes to music. I listened to everything from Classical to Country, Jazz to Rock. I just listened to the new Rolling Stones album and thought it was great and why shouldn’t it be. They’ve only been doing it for 60 years!
-
I’m a huge fan of Lorenzo Castillo and equally Rose Uniacke. I have to choose both.
-
I really love Lili Montefiore. Her work feels like a slice of everyday Australian life. I love her use of colour.
-
I dream of living in Italy but I would miss my daughter and family, so I’m very happy here in Sydney. We also have a lovely house down the far south coast which is heaven and definitely see myself at in the future.
-
I’d love to do a big old grand rambling country house, lots of history and land. That would be lovely.
-
I’m not currently looking for anyone but there’s a lot of talent out there and I always keep an open mind about working with people. That’s how we grow.
