Jo is an artist self proclaimed “colour forager”, she’s also a researcher passionate about dying, natural colours and sustainability. She is a true person of process with a focus on natural dye, mark making, hand screen print, indigo and shibori resist techniques to create abstract geometric artworks and textiles.
With over fifteen years in the design industry she has sold and exhibited her work internationally. It has been featured on trend forecasting sites as well as commissioned by major brands such as Louis Vuitton in Paris.
Joanna is also a university lecturer and is very regularly exhibiting in Australia. Her last show was at Hazelhurst gallery in December 2023.
I created the two films you see on this page during Jo’s incredible “Natural Dyeing” class where she turns small piles of quite unspectacular dry natural bits and pieces into a collection of 400 natural colours. You will see the richness and vibrancy of those colours in the films and the photos in this page.
I wish you could smell the delicious fumes of eucalyptus leaves and turmeric golden stock gently simmering while students were soaking up the superpowers of nature with their little swatch of cloth…
