Participant’s Drop Out

Letter from a mother

This letter was written by the mother of an 11-year-old girl, friend of Leonore’s. Worried about being the object of more bullying at school, she had decided to withdraw from the film two months after her interview.

Hi Flore,

I hope everything went ok with your conversation with the Principal.

I had a talk with X* before signing the release form, and unfortunately she no longer feels comfortable with what she shared on camera. It has to do with the way the boys in her class behave at school - she’s scared they might see it and make fun of her for what she spoke about.

She is really concerned about letting you down as she said “Leonore’s mum is sooo nice”, but I’ve let her know that the original plan was to only use a minute or so of her talking, so hoping it won’t affect the overall flow and narrative of your film.

I’m so sorry, but now that I know how she feels I will respect her wishes.  I know your film will be absolutely beautiful and that you and Léonore will have done an incredible job with it.

Thanks for understanding,

Y**
