Editor Wanted for Cinematic Artist Portraits

Collaboration for short-form films with edge, poetry, and purpose

The Opportunity

Why This Role Exists

I'm Flore Vallery-Radot, a filmmaker creating cinematic portraits of Australian artists and artisans. My work focuses on 1-5 minute short films - think Nowness, not bits of news.

The demand has grown to the point where I can't edit everything myself anymore. Which is exactly the problem I wanted to have.

Now I'm looking for an editor who sees this form as THE WORK, not a consolation prize while waiting for a feature or streamer's gig.

What We're Building

The Vision

Short films with edge, originality, and poetry. Social content (reels, trailers, website banners) that respects the craft. A long-term collaboration where you're a creative partner, not a technician assembling slide shows.

The Work

  • Edit 1-5 minute artist portraits (I have 3 films ready to edit now, more in pipeline)

  • Cut social content from unused rushes - beautiful, emotional, not algorithmic

  • Eventually: on-set collaboration, creative development, growing alongside the business

This could evolve into steady or full-time work as the business scales.

What I Need From You

Respect for the form
If you think short-form artist docs are "lesser" work, we're not a fit.

Creative voice
I want proposals, ideas, pushback. Not yes-person assembly. Sprinkle in some crazy, some uniqueness, some edge. Think outside the box with me.

Nowness fluency
You understand pacing, restraint, when to let images breathe.

Reliability
You hit deadlines, communicate clearly, don't ghost mid-project.

Located anywhere in the world
I’m happy to work with someone who is not based in Sydney (like me) as long as we have a solid remote workflow system.

DaVinci Resolve proficiency
I need a working timeline delivered in DaVinci Resolve where final tweaks and grading will happen (by me). If you prefer editing in another software, you must test the timeline in DVR before delivery — clips at correct scale, titles functioning, effects intact. No broken timelines.

Long-term vision
You want to build something, not just take a gig.

The Assignment

Before you apply, I need to know we speak the same visual language.

Part 1:Watch these 5 short films on NOWNESS:

  1. Il Capo – Yuri Ancarani

  2. Mug – James Tilla Waters

  3. Once the Dust Has Settled

  4. Paola Navone

  5. Pedro Reyes & Carla Fernández

For each film, write 2-3 sentences about what struck you - what worked, what you noticed about the craft, what moved you.

Part 2: Watch these very short films + 1 trailer by me

  1. Nadine’s book launch “Luna”

  2. A musical portrait of a surfboard maker

  3. Plants Chroma Codes

  4. Camie Lyons Artist

  5. Nicola Hart’s frills

  6. Deconstructing with Graziela Guardino

  7. Paola Do Prado’s hands

  8. A Little Bag For Me - Viral Instagram trailer (2M views)

Write a short paragraph (4-5 sentences) about what you see in my work: the aesthetic, the approach, what excites you about collaborating on films like these.

This isn't a test with right answers. I want to understand how you see.

How to Apply

Send the following to me:

Include:

  1. A 60-90 second video of yourself
Tell me who you are, why this work excites you, and why you think we'd collaborate well together.

  2. Your reel or portfolio link
Show me work you're proud of.

  3. Your assignment responses
2-3 sentences per Nowness fil + a paragraph for my linked films as a whole (see above).

Not sure if this is for you?

If you're excited about building a body of work in short-form artist portraiture, and you want a creative partnership that could grow into something substantial, apply.

If you see this as a side gig while waiting for "real" projects - we're not a fit.
